Welcome to Devon’s Beach Cafes – places to enjoy good food with a view

Some no more than a shack on the beach, others set in award-winning sustainable buildings, Devon’s beach cafes give a wealth of choice. Whether you’re starting the day with a beachside breakfast, stopping for lunch while walking the coastal path, or enjoying locally produced food on a family day on the beach, there is something for everyone.

We hope this site will help you enjoy some of Devon’s gastronomic gems as much as we do. We have also included details of each beach and amenities it offers. However, with the ever changing nature of water quality we suggest you visit Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) interactive map for the lates update on the water quality for a particular beach.
Our aim is to give a perfect accompaniment to your beach visit.

Our story

During the past few years beach cafes have undergone a renaissance —  no longer the soggy sandwiches and lukewarm tea of yesteryear. Today you will find a mouth-watering array of different foods and an equally colourful selection of cafes. With this in mind we wanted to give residents and visitors alike both details of the myriad of beach cafes in South Devon combined with an up-to-date guide to the beaches they are on.

We are Devon enthusiasts eager to give you as much information about this very special place as we can so that you can enjoy it as much as we do.

Anne Brunner-Ellis (Andy to friends) has returned to Devon after many years working in communications in Oxford. She is now living in the South Hams and loving every minute of it. I guess she is the person running the show. Jonathan Mathys, her husband, loves visiting the cafes and tasting the goods!

Jo Makin, also grew up in Devon and spent many happy times on Devon’s beaches. Trained in food technology she is particularly happy to sample the cafe fayre.

Photographer and website developer, Dick Makin, is the brains behind the website.
